KAUPAPA KERERŪ COMMUNITY COUNT

This year's Banks Peninsula Kererū Community Count is taking place this February 12th - 20th.

Our previous Kereru Community Counts have been very successful. More than 140 people participated

in the counts, over 40% of the peninsula was surveyed, and hundreds of kererū were seen

We have divided Banks Peninsula into grid squares (1km x 1km). From 12 – 20 February

we hope to get as many people as possible out on the peninsula looking for kererū.  The aim of

the count is to gather more information about the distribution of kererū on Banks Peninsula, and

to compare the results of this count to the results of the previous counts. We have a Lincoln University

Te Tīpu Pūtaiao Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Dr Heidi Stevens, analysing the results of all three

count days. The results from this years count day will be distributed to all participants

To make the day a success we need the help of the Banks Peninsula community and would

greatly appreciate any time you can volunteer to our Kererū Count.  It will take about 30 minutes

to survey a square grid.

If you would like to participate in the Kererū Count follow the instructions below:

1/  Download a survey form by clicking here

2/  Check out our map of the peninsula to work out which area you wish to survey by clicking here

You will see that the map has been divided into 36 red grids, labelled A to JJ.  You can see the map more

clearly by zooming in using the 'page' button at the top right of the screen.

3/  These letters correspond to smaller, more detailed maps which are available by clicking on the relevant

letters below (e.g. if you are doing the Diamond Harbour area you will want map D):

A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q S T U V W X Y Z AA BB CC DD EE FF GG HH II JJ

These maps are then divided into smaller black squares which are numbered.  Use these maps to conduct your

survey - you can survey as few or as many squares as you wish.  Identify them on the survey sheet using the

letter - number combination e.g. C11.

Follow the instructions on the survey sheet and happy counting!
