Kaupapa Kererū is an iwi-lead, community based, multi-agency project that was set up in 2000 to increase the numbers and range of kererū or the New Zealand Native Pigeon on Te Pataka o Rakaihautū / Banks Peninsula, Canterbury.  

OBJECTIVES

To increase numbers and range of kererū on Te Pataka o Rakaihautū / Banks Peninsula through a three-pronged approach:

• Working with the community to raise awareness and appreciation for kererū, including their key role in the restoration of indigenous forest
• Researching kererū ecology including population, distribution, movements, foods and predation
• Implementing research results to actively restore kererū habitat and control kererū predation
